Essay: Data and Dogma: The Use and Abuse of Information

KEITH H. CHARLTON

Philosophy exists to help us examine our unexamined assumptions. Many chiropractors use their "philosophy" to prevent this exercise. Epistemology is that fundamental cornerstone of philosophy which deals with the nature of knowledge and its production. An exercise of both philosophy and epistemology provides a worthy foundation for the consideration of some of the ways in which groups in the chiropractic profession generate information and then purvey it to the profession at large.

For Debate: Basic Mechanics of the Vertebral Subluxation

JOHN DULHUNTY

It is postulated that what chiropractors have called vertebral subluxations do not exist. Chiropractors have realised that the traditional concepts were overly simplistic, vague and in many instances inaccurate, however their attempts to re-define and modernise the 'subluxation' have only served to exacerbate the situation. An objective, concise outline of the normal, abnormal, and corrective biomechanics of the spine is presented in an attempt to establish a unified scientific basis for chiropractic's therapeutic endeavours.

INDEX TERMS: CHIROPRACTIC; SUBLUXATION; BIOMECHANICS.

Commentary: Isn't It Time to Abandon Anachronistic Terminology?

PETER BRYNER

Functional integration of chiropractors into the Australian health care system is less readily achieved than structural integration. Philosophic ideas as expressed by some chiropractors create one of the barriers. The historical context of terms, such as innate intelligence and vitalism, and modern attitudes to the appropriate place of philosophy in chiropractic, are discussed. Adoption of terminology such as holism and homoeostasis, if properly understood and used, may further facilitate integration into the health care system.

INDEX TERMS: CHIROPRACTIC PHILOSOPHY; CHIROPRACTIC PREMISE; CHIROPRACTIC PRINCIPLES; INNATE INTELLIGENCE; HOMEOSTASIS; HOLISM; VITALISM; HISTORY.

Changes in Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate Following Exercise in the Inverted Position

CHARLOTTE LEBOEUF, RICHARD A. AMES, COLLIN W. BUDICH and ANDREW F. VINCENT

The relationship of aerobic exercise, blood pressure and pulse rate was studied between the inverted and upright positions. Mean pulse rates decreased after exercise in the inverted position and increased in the upright. Systemic blood pressure increased after exercise in the inverted position more than the upright after exercise. The differences for pulse rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the two positions were statistically significant.

INDEX TERMS: INVERSION; PULSE RATE; BLOOD PRESSURE; EXERCISE.

An Approach to Calcium Supplementation in Clinical Practice

JENNIFER R. JAMISON

Calcium deficiency has been linked epidemiologically and clinically with certain chronic diseases prevalent in modern society. Implementation of a non-invasive, inexpensive calcium intake diary coupled with dietary modification and calcium supplementation may constitute a health promotion strategy appropriate for patient care by chiropractors in their role as primary contact practitioners.

INDEX TERMS: CALCIUM; OSTEOPOROSIS; HYPERTENSION; COLORECTAL CARCINOMA; DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION.

Elongated Styloid Process of the Temporal Bone

STANLEY P. BOLTON

Twelve patients presenting for chiropractic care had elongated styloid processes of the temporal bone. Spinographs of two of these patients are illustrated. The incidence and significance of elongated styloid process is discussed.
