A History of X-Ray Licensing of Chiropractors in Australia

STANLEY P. BOLTON

The credibility of a profession or procedure is enhanced by its recognition and regulation by government and/or statutory bodies. Licensing of chiropractors to use x-ray for spinography was the first such step in the legitimation of the chiropractic profession in Australia. A historical account of the licensing of chiropractors to use x-ray is presented. It identifies the essential role of the use of x-ray in chiropractic and underlines the significance of the x-ray licensing process as a primary event in the legitimation of chiropractic in Australia.

Radiation Doses from Diagnostic X-rays in Australia and Overseas

DONALD K. FREEMAN and REG T. POOLE

Investigations in Australia and overseas of the radiation doses from diagnostic x-ray examinations show that the variation in dose for the same examination at different establishments is extremely large. Patient doses in chiropractic examinations are very low compared to the doses received in examinations performed by radiologists in private practice and large hospitals. The low patient doses achieved by chiropractors are associated with the use of technique factors that are known to result in a low dose.

Asthma in a Chiropractic Clinic: A Pilot Study

JENNIFER R. JAMISON, KARL LESKOVEC, SANDRA LEPORE and PAUL HANNAN

A pilot study was performed on 16 asthmatics to determine whether chiropractic care influenced respiratory function. Both subjective and objective data were collected. Results suggested that patient satisfaction with chiropractic care should not be assumed to reflect an improvement in asthma control. Subjective assessment by patients of their current status was furthermore found to correlate poorly with the extent of their bronchospasm as reflected by objective measurement of respiratory indices. Defects in subject selection make definitive statements about chiropractic control of asthma difficult. Investigation of a larger study group with more stringent protocol is recommended.

Substance Abuse: A Consideration for Primary Contact Practice

JENNIFER R. JAMISON

Chiropractors, as primary contact practitioners, share responsibility for attempting to maximise the patient's potential for optimal health. One of the prevalent health risks in the 1980s is substance abuse. Chiropractors, experts in biomechanical care, therefore find themselves being called upon to assist in the recognition of chemically induced dysfunctions. This paper attempts to assist the practitioner in the recognition of certain clinical findings associated with substance abuse.

The Genius of D.D. Palmer

ALLAN G.J. TERRETT

D.D. Palmer made great contributions to manual medicine by applying the anatomical and neurological knowledge of his time to the concept of tone (homoeostasis), and to relate these to spinal therapy, which he termed "chiropractic." Most concepts of D.D. Palmer have withstood the test of time, but his principles were ignored by a large sector of the chiropractic profession, as some early leaders of the profession made it almost impossible to obtain his writings for over half a century.
