ABSTRACTS

Roots: A Mainstream Chronicle

STANLEY P. BOLTON

The roots of mainstream chiropractic in Australia lie embedded in the North American continent. A chronology of chiropractors entering practice in Australia up to and following the formation of the Australian Chiropractors' Association in 1938, corroborate this point. Supporting evidence is presented.

The Injured Worker: Role of the Chiropractor

RONALD C. EVANS

The profile of the injured American worker and the role of the chiropractor in relation to assessment and management of work-related injuries are outlined, with particular emphasis on the therapeutic goals and rating of residual impairments. Factors for consideration in assessing rateable losses of work function are summarised, and several classical evaluation systems are compared. The developing role of the chiropractor, whether generalist or specialist in neuro-orthopaedics, is highlighted

Chiropractic As Conventional Health Care

JENNIFER R. JAMISON

Chiropractic is achieving functional integration in the orthodox health care system. Analysis of a questionnaire investigating certain aspects of chiropractic scopes of practice confirm this trend. Australian chiropractors are also tending to assume the responsibilities of primary health care practitioners. While chiropractic diagnosis invariably results in musculo-skeletal intervention in symptomatic patients, preventive health care requires an altogether more comprehensive patient or client approach. Whether chiropractors will ultimately elect to function as a primary care setting or as active participants in the health care team will be determined by the selective implementation of diverse tasks available within their potential scope of practice. Chiropractors can no longer be considered alternative health care practitioners; chiropractic is part of orthodox or conventional health care.

Whiplash: Mechanisms and Patterns of Tissue Injury

MICHAEL N. WEBB and ALLAN G.J. TERRETT

A literature review and discussion of "whiplash" is presented with emphasis on mechanisms producing injury and the subsequent tissue damage likely to occur under various circumstances. Attention is drawn to the lack of consideration given by clinicians to concomitant injury of the soft tissue and articular structures of the low back and pelvis. "Lumbopelvic deceleration syndrome" is introduced as a term to draw attention to postulated mechanisms of thoracic, lumbar spine and pelvic injury from whiplash. Mechanisms involving temperomandibular joint injury during whiplash are discussed.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Thoracic Spine

LINDSAY J. ROWE

A case of Hodgkin's lymphoma is reviewed through case history, physical and radiographic examination. The radiographic differential diagnosis for multiple ivory vertebrae (osteoblastic metastatic carcinoma, Paget's disease, Hodgkin's lymphoma, osteopetrosis tarda, fluorosis, myleofibrosis, chronic infection) is discussed as well as the pathology.
