Straighten Up Australia
Straighten Up Australia (SUA), a
campaign aimed at improving spinal health and posture, was launched by
Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, the late Kerryn McCann during
National Chiropractic Care Week at the Sydney Opera House on 22 May
2006.
The media launch marked the first stage of Straighten Up Australia,
which was designed as an ongoing community health promotion and
awareness program.
The campaign encouraged Australians to adopt a simple three-minute
spinal health exercise program as part of their daily routine in an
effort to help improve posture, stabilise core muscle groups, enhance
health and prevent spinal disability.
As the theme for NCCW 2006, it was incredibly successful, with CAA
members purchasing and distributing more than 80,000 brochures during
the week.
A wide cross section of the community contacted the CAA during NCCW
– from councils, hospitals, fitness instructors and schools to
community health services, the Country Women’s Association and
State Emergency Services. Many requests were from occupational health
and safety managers in government departments, signifying the importance
employers placed on implementing measures to enhance their
employees’ health and prevent injury.
And the momentum has continued, with orders for brochures and posters
continuing to be received at CAA National to this day.
At last count, more than 135,000 brochures have been distributed and
the website continues to attract regular visitors with up to 10,000 page
views each year.
Amazing figures for a community service initiative which continues to
flourish.
Although the SUA program does not directly promote chiropractic, it
reinforces the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through the
choices we make each day, providing an ideal opportunity for
chiropractors to become involved in the health of their community.
